ART PHILOSOPHY: Skinner Post Office

Hello Everyone!!

I'm still settling in in our California townhouse!  Here's one of the HOME DECOR projects that I promised you.  Since we have downsized (from 3000sqft to 1000sqft), we have to be 'space smart' and make our decorative elements serve multiple purposes and be 'functional' as well as 'decorative'.  One of those areas for me now is the entryway.  Before my entryway had enough space for me to have these baskets (4 of them), artwork and two black cabinets.  I also had a coat closet for those seasonal things.  Now, there is no closet and the entryway is a 5' x 5' tiled space with the front door and the door to the garage.

One of the things that I have always liked having in my entryway is this family "Post Office" system.  It has saved our lives many times (and the lives of our children) because when someone checked the mail it was easy to distribute it to the appropriate basket.  We had 8 baskets... one for each family member (5 Skinners and Memaw), one for our current foreign exchange student and one for junk mail.  No more lost mail... or mail that got put on the table... or the kitchen counter... or tossed into a bag... or wherever.  Even after my son joined the military, his mail continued to come to our home, so we would put it in the basket and when the basket got full, we would mail it to him or just wait for him to come home and check it.  Like I said, I love this system because it kept us organized.  I purchased these baskets at the CONTAINER STORE (each one has two baskets) years ago.  I painted them red and printed the "Skinner Family Post Office" off my computer with a clipart border, then framed it in a black frame from the dollar store.

Not only have the number of baskets changed (we only need one 2-basket), my colors have changed with the move.  My living areas used to be black & red, with a touch of green.  Now, green is the main color and I added yellow to the black.  I love it!  So colorful!  So, spray paint was on the shopping list...

Instead of printing the sign, I can now be more creative because I have a cricut now!  I used OPPOSITES ATTRACT cricut cartridge and ART PHILOSOPHY cricut cartridge (CTMH) for everything.

Here's a quick video showing how I welded the top font to layer on the bottom font that I stretched taller... all  using my gypsy:

Click HERE if you cannot see the video above

I love how the one font layers over the other!  You can do this technique for the titles of your scrapbook pages.  Click HERE to see a cute Halloween layout that I did using this same technique, it also includes a video and free cutfile.

I backed the nameplate with a pretty green fabric because the size of my frame is 13" x 15" and scrapbook paper would have left a seam.

I think that this frame is really pretty just like it is, but the ART PHILOSOPHY cartridge from CLOSE TO MY HEART has so many beautiful elements on it... I just couldn't resist adding a little somethin' somethin' to the top corner.  So... here it is:

RECIPE
LEMON FLOWER Paper Stack by DCWV
ART PHILOSOPHY Cricut Cartridge by CTMH
Layer 1:  scalloped circle cut at 3.5"
Layer 2:  three leaves cut at 2"
Layer 3:  three flowers cut at 3" and 4"
Layer 4:  two swirls cut at 2"
Black ColorBox cateye ink
Lime ColorBox cateye ink

Beautiful!  I think I may have to make some of these for Christmas gifts this year and substitute the word "Post Office" with the first names layered on top of a last name.  Overall, this is a very inexpensive gift, but would be treasured I'm sure.

Here is my entryway now... told ya... small.  But, now so cute!  I'm really happy with how it is turning out!

If you haven't purchased the Close To My Heart ART PHILOSOPHY cartridge yet, you can order it from my friend, Melanie HERE.  She has made MANY things with it and have posted them all in one post HERE! GYPSY TIP: Saving CUTFILES (video)

Hello Everyone!

I've shared this information with everyone before, but I still get questions about it, so I've made a video to help explain it better.

GYPSY TIP: Saving CUTFILES

Click HERE if you have any trouble seeing the video above.

Definition of a CUTFILE - Design Studio uses .cut files and the Gypsy uses .gypsy files, both of which can be used with the cricut machines.
-- Gypsy cutfiles can be saved in two locations (1) internally in the gypsy and (2) uploaded to your computer.
-- You do not need to own Design Studio in order to save cutfiles to your computer.
-- Yes, you can convert a .gypsy file to .cut and vice versa, though there are still some difficulties with 'some' files because DS and GYPSY still have differences that don't communicate well between them (ex: hide contour).

SUGGESTION FOR ORGANIZING CUTFILES ON GYPSY
I am very careful about what I name my files, because the file folder (only one, no subfolders) stores cutfiles alphabetically starting with uppercase then again with lowercase. I try to 'group' like files... so if I design my own cupcake wrapper and want to use it as a template over and over to make more customizable wrappers, here is how I would name the files:

TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper
TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper - Crowns
TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper - Flowers
TEMPLATE - Cupcake Wrapper - Shamrocks

Notice that the main template does not have a specified image and will appear first in this grouping. Everything else will be alphabetized by the last words and all the Cupcake Wrappers will be grouped together and easy to find. Another example would be cards, here is how I have mine saved:

CARD - BDAY - Cake
CARD - BDAY - Flower
CARD - BDAY - Mom
CARD - BDAY - Superman

Do you get it? The first word is the 'GROUP' you want the file to be in and the second word is the 'CATEGORY' of cutfile it is and the third word 'DESCRIBES' the file or is the 'KEYWORD'.

Now this is pretty much the same for files that I upload to my computer... UNLESS... (there is always an 'unless' isn't there? lol)... you are sharing it with the wide world web. If you are sharing cutfiles... I HIGHLY recommend that you also add your name or an identifying title to the end like this:

CARD - Birthday - Cake TSKINNER

That will help with identifying your cutfiles on other blogs, both for you and for others. Also helps remind people 'who' they got the cutfile from and you would hope that they would give you credit for the design when they make something with it..

How do you share cutfiles with the wide world web? I use www.box.net it is a free service (with limitations) and easy to use.

The gypsy has the capability to store up to 10,000 cutfiles!! Now that is ALOT of info crammed all into one folder! My hope is that by the time any of us get anywhere close to that number, PC will have upgraded the file folder and made subfolders possible! Hey! A girl can dream... right!? LOL!

Hope that helps you a bit in getting organized with your Gypsy cutfiles! If you find TIPS like this helpful, please subscribe or become a follower because I have more for you!

Tammy

SOPHIE: Bookmarks with Recycled Plastic

Hello Everyone!!

I'm working on my Home Decor projects and will be posting them all this week.  But, before I get started on that, I wanted to share these bookmarks that I made using the new SOPHIE Cricut Cartridge.  I'm sorry... this cartridge is exclusive to the Cricut Circle, but I just HAD to show you the cool 'bookmark' feature that it has!

These are some of the prettiest bookmarks I have ever seen!  Every image on this cartridge has a coordinating bookmark with 1 layer.  I cut the non-shift image out of recycled plastic and cut the layers out of my new favorite cardstock, LEMON FLOWER by DCWV.  (hehee... I told you I bought several of those paper stacks!)

I think that these bookmarks would make great gifts.

I chose two bookmarks that have different shapes and then layered the butterfly and bird on top of them.  All cuts are from the SOPHIE Cricut Cartridge.

I layered both front and back of the bookmarks.

The butterfly is two layers which I inked the edges of and added silver glittered skittles down the middle.

The bird is also 2 layers which I inked the edges and added a pearl for the eye.

The plastic I used is something that you all have... it's the blister packs that our cricut cartridges come in.  It cuts beautifully in the cricut and to give it a finished frosted look I lightly sanded each side before adding the cardstock layers.

Super easy... very inexpensive... so so cute.

CHIC & SCARY: Sweet 16 Scrapbook Layout

Hello Everyone!!

I have always loved planning parties and have had tons of fun over the years planning my children's (they're not kids anymore) birthday parties!  When my daughter turned 16, we hosted a "Sweet 16 Masquerade Ball".  Complete with caterer, DJ, costumes and yep!... masks!  I sooooo wish we had had a cricut back then (it was in 2005), because we had a 'Mask Making' party about two weeks before the ball and all her friends came over and made the masks they were going to wear.  Teresa Collins' new CHIC & SCARY Cricut Cartridge has two different shaped masks on it that would have been perfect for our project.

Well, it's too late to use the masks for the party, but not too late to use them for the scrapbook of the party! I had so much fun decorating the masks for this layout.

I cut the 'cat-eye' shaped mask at 2.5" using cardstock from Teresa Collins' "POSH" line.  This cardstock was perfect for this!  Doesn't it look like lace?!  Then I used inexpensive gathered lace and my terrifically tacky tape to add the lace to the back of the mask.

I added pink bling to finish embellishing the mask, in true "Teresa Collins" style.

The two 'rounded' shaped masks were cut at 2" and again, the cardstock is from the TC Posh line.

I LOVE the entire line of cartridges that Teresa has designed for Provo Craft!  I've always been an admirer of hers and love her style, so to be able to combine it with the love of my cricut is just 'win win' for me!  It was really hard not to pull out my SOPHISTICATED cartridge for my title box, but I try very hard to use only the feature cartridge on my projects.  That way, you won't get confused as to what cut is from where and it also makes it much easier to re-create if you don't have to worry about owning multiple cartridges.  So, instead I 'hand-cut' (gasp!) this frame from one of the cardstocks in the POSH line.  Added my title and some bling and ta-da!  I'm done!

This was our family photo for 2005... lol.  We had so much fun at that party!  Our family & friends still talk about it!  Ahhhhh.... good times!

Don't forget about all the giveaways going on right now!  Seriously!  I included the links in the post below, but there are some great cartridges about to find new homes!  I'm giving away the BOTANICALS Cricut Lite Cartridge, so leave a comment and just make sure you are a follower to be eligible to win!  I will announce the winner on Monday!

Have a great Friday!  I'm cropping at a local scrapbook store all day today with my mother-in-law!  I'm so excited!  The store is called "She's So Crafty" and is right here in Redding!  I'll give you a full report tomorrow!

Tammy
